Our History

Altonized Community Federal Credit Union was chartered on June 16, 1939. It was established to serve the employees of the Owens Illinois plant in Alton, Illinois along with immediate family members and any businesses they owned.

The purpose was to give members an opportunity to accumulate a savings and the credit union also created a source of credit for loans. The credit union was established to service the Owens Illinois plant in the beginning and over the past 75 years the field of membership has expanded. We look forward to serving you and your family today as well as in the future to come.

The credit union idea is a simple one: people should be able to pool their money and make loans to each other. It’s an idea that evolved from cooperative activities in the 19th century Europe. Since that time, the idea’s guiding principles have remained the same: 1) only people who are credit union members should borrow there, 2) loans are made for “prudent and productive” purposes; 3) a person’s desire to repay (character) is considered more important than the ability (income) to repay. Members are, after all, borrowing their own money and that of their friends.
